Countries within the Association of South East Asian Economies, (ASEAN) are using the lessons of the currency meltdown in 1998 to create sophisticated market economies that rely on a current account surplus. This strength has encouraged the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) needed to grow their industries, leading to further exports.
Although these economies are dependent on exports to the U.S., China and Japan, they are increasingly reliant upon trade to each other and Latin America. This diversification will allow them to more successfully weather future global economic disturbances.
