Global warming in Antartica - Support for global action

March 7, 2008

New research on global warming in Antartica confirms that its glaciers are losing their mass at an "unusually rapid" rate. Satellite pictures taken between 1992 and 1996 showed that the Pine Island Glacier lost thickness at a rate of 1.6 meters per year.

Research done by the British Antarctic Survey was able to show that the average rate over the last 4,700 years had been only 3.8 centimeters a year. In other words, the glacier is losing mass at a rate 42 times faster than the average over the preceding 5,000 years.  (Source: Der Spiegel, “New Research Confirms Antarctic Thaw Fears ,” March 7, 2008)

What global warming in Antartica means:
Researchers cannot state that the change is a result of mand-made activity, or some kind of natural thaw. However, this type of data will give support to efforts such as the Kyoto Agreement.

The research also ties into studies that show that surface waters around the glaciers are 1.5 degrees Celsius warmer. Furthermore, the loss of ice in the Antarctic and Greenland is 125 gigatons per year, which is contributing 10% to the current rise in sea level, about 3 millimeters per year.

Futhermore, the risks and subsequent costs created by climate change will continue, resulting in higher volatility in the markets. For example, there will be more devastation, such as that wrought by Hurricane Katrina, that can’t be planned for.

Action steps:
Ask your financial advisor about investing in companies that are making efforts to improve their energy efficiency. These types of companies will profit as energy costs continue to climb over the coming decades.

Furthermore, a well-diversified portfolio and lifestyle will allow you the personal flexibility to make the shifts necessary in the more volatile world created by climate change
